Moderation is the key, but 1-2 drinks (1 for women, 2 for men) per day is actually a healthy habit.

Research at the Harvard School of Public Health reported a significant protective effect from moderate use of alcohol. One or two glasses of wine a day resulted in a 26 percent reduction in the risk of heart disease. Alcohol also metabolizes in the liver and increases HDL-C levels.

Red wines contain resveratrol, an antioxidant that can protect the body from free-radical attack and promises to have a number of anti-aging effects.

Alcohol may not have a huge effect on wieght but it hinders the ability to work out at a level that helps for weight loss. No more than ONE DAY PER WEEK of drinking if you ask me, and not more than 5 drinks.
